Magnets, like RF cavities, are critical components in PBPL laboratories, and are used for manipulating charged particle beams: bending them, focusing them, wiggling them.
Essentially all of the magnets used in PBPL are designed and fabricated within our lab, using the facilities of the UCLA physics machine shop to produce state-of-the-art devices. Most of the design and fabrication work for electromagnet quadrupoles, dipoles, sextupoles, steering magnets, and solenoids, is performed by students and staff of the PBPL. Permanent magnet devices such as ultra-high gradient quads are manufactured in collaboration with industry; PBPL undulators have traditionally been built with the lead of the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy in Moscow.
