The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an X-ray Free-Electron Laser, using the last third of the linear accelerator at SLAC. A rf photo electron gun generates electron bunches with a repetition rate of 120 Hz. At an energy of 100 MeV they are injected into the main SLAC beam line and further accelerated up to 14.3 GeV. Two stages of bunch compressions increase the current to 3.4 kA and reduce the bunch length to 200 fs FWHM. A final dog leg transports the electron beam to the 120 m long undulator with a peak field of 1.32 T and a period of 3 cm. The undulator is segmented into modules of 3.5 m length and drift spaces, holding the strong focusing quadrupole lattice and diagnostics. The FEL can supply 4 experimental stations.
