Ramped Electron Bunch Experiment

Experimental Evidence for Ramped Electron Bunches

Streaks taken using the RF Deflector of the electron beam after passing through the dogleg compressor are shown in the following graphic. The top row of images are false color plots of the transverse profile of the electron beam, which has been streaked in the vertical (y) direction by the RF deflector. Below each image is the reconstructed longitudinal current profile of the beam.

The final beam charge at the deflection screen was approximately 100 pC. Note that in these images, there is a residual nonlinear dispersion along the x-axis. Consequently, the horizontal dimension in the images is related to the beam energy. As the sextupole field strength is increased, we can actually visualize the "turning over" of the distribution in the longitudinal phase space as the sextupole corrector magnets are ramped up from 0 to 2 Amps.
