(Los Angeles, CA, 24MAY04) RadiaBeam Technologies has been awarded a Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant. The proposal was titled, "An Inexpensive High-Current Betatron Using Fixed-Field Alternating-Gradient Focusing and New Low-Loss Magnetic Materials."
The Betatron, an early accelerator design, has had little development since the original work some 50 years ago. Betatrons using modern technologies and designed with numerical simulations may provide a cost-effective radiation source for industrial and medical applications. RadiaBeam Technologies will be working closely with PBPL to develop the accelerator design as well as to produce an educational version of the betatron.
RadiaBeam Technologies is a provider of custom accelerator components. The company was founded in 2003 by former PBPL members and works closely with the group on technology transfer and custom engineering solutions.
