Goals of the Workshop
:The X-ray free-eelctron laser (XFEL) is now being developed as the next generation of light sources. The projected characteristics of sub-picosecond pulse length, coherence, GW peak power, and very high peak brightness make the XFEL a unique instrument that can open new areas of research in physics, materials, chemistry and biology. The successful development of the XFEL poses new challenges for particle beam and free-electron laser physics and technology. Manipulation and shaping of the electron beam and of the the X-ray pulse would increase even further the usefulness of the XFEL by better matching the characteristics of the X-ray pulse to the experiments. A workshop with the participation of scientists developing the XFEL and scientists preparing to exploit its unique properties will reinforce the communication between the two groups and within each group. The Arcidosso workshop, with its tradition of holding scientific meetings that promote ease of communication among participants in an informal atmosphere, aims to fill this need.
